Mutations

Mutations are unexpected changes in the DNA, that occur spontaneously. They can be caused by either errors in copying of the DNA, or by environmental factors, such as radiation (for example, UV radiation from the sun). These are referred to as mutagens. Occasionally a mutation will have a beneficial effect, however typically it will incur an adverse effect such a increased risk of developing cancer.
