Nanoscience

Nanoscience is the study of particles on a nano level (1-100nm). A nanometre being a billionth of a metre, or \(10^{-9}\)m. For scale, that is 800x smaller than the width of a human hair.

Nanoparticles have a larger surface area to volume ratio, than typical particles. In having this, they are better able to react with other substances. Electrons are also able to pass through them easier. They can also be more sensitive to light, heat, pH, electricity, or magnetism.

Uses

  • Because of its larger surface area to volume ratio, it is better able to react - hence its use in rocket fuel.
  • By researching nanoscience in nature, it has been able to take properties of plants such as water repellent leaves to man-made objects.
  • By use of silver nanoparticles, which can kill off bacteria, being placed in socks - it can prevent socks from becoming smelly.

Risks

  • Through further research, nanoscience could be applied to the development of weapons.
  • Nano-machines could malfunction, and perform a different operation than is expected.
